By October 1969, Gilberto Gil had already been in prison; had left it and taken a plane to his place of exile: London in the U.K.
He had been kidnapped in late December 1968 by an Army squad, taken from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro and dumped into a prison cell inside the barracks of the Brazilian Army. Later in the year he was taken yet to Salvador-BA and given a choice of sorts: the Army renegades would let him go only if he promised he would leave Brazil for ever.
On the eve of leaving his beloved country Gilberto Gil wrote and recorded a goodbye song named 'Aquele abraço' (I send you an embrace before I leave). It went straight to #1 . It took Gilberto Gil to the only place he had never been yet: to the top of the singles' chart.
