João Roberto Kelly was a bright pianist and a song-writer who worked for TV Excelsior in Rio de Janeiro. He sort of had 'carte blanche' and was involved in the production of such winner weekly musicals as 'Times Square' and 'My fair show'. They were highly sophisticated musical numbers intertwined with comic dialogues written by Max Nunes and other script-writers that had a large following around Brazil. As we all know, the Military Junta did not like TV Excelsior and did everything to destroy it. The Military Dictators finally got what they wanted when they gave their blessing to conservative right-wing Mr. Marinho who created TV Globo out of a huge loan from Time-Life that eventually sunk all possible competition and Brazil became a country with one single TV station; Dorinha Duval & Castrinho had their Bonequinhos (puppets on a string) sketch on Saturday's 'Times Square'. RCA release a whole album of their duets mostly written by João Roberto Kelly. TV Excelsior's studios were in Ipanema where Cine Astoria used to be. 

Rinaldo Calheiros' '12 vezes sucesso' (12 x hits) and Carequinha's 'O idolo da garotada' are a bit anachronic here. Mr. Calheiros had been big in 1962 dueting with Silvana in a few tangos that went to #1. Two years later Rinaldo wasn't much anymore. Times had changed but Revista do Radio didn't seem to mind. Carequinha, a circus  clown who recorded for Copacabana too, was even older. Carequinha had been very prominent in the early 1960s but now was confined to kids show on TV. Even so Carequinha tried to keep up with the times recording a twist (a craze contained in the year 1962) and a bit of cha-cha which was ever older. 'Rio, quarto centenário' (Rio de Janeiro's 400th birthday) was probably the only actual 'modern' song here.

'Sucessos Odeon de 1964' had a few hits from 1963, like the original 'Garota de Ipanema' recorded for the very 1st time by Pery Ribeiro; Philips' Corisco & Sambaloucos chart again with a follow up album though they had a change in membership; Sambalanço Trio were big at Audio Fidelity and The Beatles' 'A hard day's night' movie-sound-track which was called 'Os reis do ié, ié, ié' (The yeah-yeah kings) in Brazil was top of the heap.

As the city of Rio de Janeiro turned 400 years old in 1965, there were many albums about the event. French bomb-shell Brigitte Bardot came visiting and was hosted by Vera Lucia Couto, the first Black Miss Brazil in history; Vera Lucia sings 'Rosa dourada', a marcha-rancho for Carnval 1965; RCA released 400 Rio de Janeiro with Cauby Peixoto, Nelson Gonçalves, Orlando Silva, Carlos Galhardo and new face Jose Ricardo; Continental released a whole album by composer Radamés Gnatalli & Orquestra Sinfonica Continental having himself at the piano and José Menezes at the accoustic guitar; talking about José Menezes, he and his combo Velhinhos Transviados (Delinquent Little Old Men) in which he played most of the instruments release another album with covers of songs that had been hits in 1963 and 1964 like 'Ya ya twist', 'Garota solitária', 'Quem eu quero não me quer' etc.; Mocambo releases a new album by old timer Sylvio Caldas who still had a lot of fans around the country; CBS releases Carlos Alberto's 3rd album with covers of boleros done originally by Mexican and Latin American acts; Odeon does it better and presents Wilson Simonal as the next big thing after Philips' Jorge Ben. Wilson Simonal would soar high in the next few years; Quincy Jones does his homework working on Henry Mancini's hits; and finally Giane, who became popular singing 'Dominique' in Portuguese in 1964, has a 2nd single hit with 'Preste atenção' which is featured in her 2nd album for Chantecler.

Rio de Janeiro's 400-year celebration continues. Elenco releases 2 albums about Rio's 4th Centenary: famous Brazilian impresario Carlos Machado produced a show at Copacabana Palace's Golden Room with Lindolfo Gaya's arrangements of songs by Tom Jobim, Dorival Caymmi, Ary Barroso, Billy Blanco and other great song-writers. Then he added a bit of Carmen Miranda repertoire and that was 'Rio de 400 Janeiros'; Farroupilha was the 'other' independent label. Not as celebrated as Elenco but good enough. Edgard started with Os Uirapurus, went on as comedian in Enrico Simonetti's Show on TV Excelsior and now Farroupilha released his first album as a guitarrist; Elis Regina's 1st album for Philips went to the top almost immediately after being released; The Clevers' 4th album for Continental 'Dançando com The Clevers' was a winner too; Italian acts dominated the Hit Parade in 1964 and they kept on playing on the radio and selling a lot of records, especially those RCA compilation albums like 1965's 'Benissimo' which contained Rita Pavone ('San Francesco'), Nico Fidenco ('A casa d'Irene'), Gianni Meccia ('La cabina'), Edoardo Vianello ('Tremarella') etc.: 'Velhinhos Transviados embalados': a usual guitar virtuoso José Menezes comes up with last year's greatest hits. This time they are Osvaldo Nunes' 'Na onda do berimbau', John Laudermilk's 'Road hog' ('Calhambeque'), Jair Rodrigues''Deixa isso p'ra lá', Millie Small's 'My boy lollipop', 'Pink Panhter's' sound-track with 'Meglio stasera', Rita Pavone's 'Remember me' etc.

Elenco kept on releasing album after album. Kaleidoscopio is a compilation album containing 'Garota de Ipanema' (Tom Jobim), 'Você e eu' (Sylvia Telles), 'Berimbau' (Vinicius de Moraes), 'Maria Moita' (Nara Leão) etc.; Luiz Vieira kept on selling albums for the 3rd year in a row due mainly for his weekly show on TV Excelsior. The main track, 'Estrela de veludo' (Velvet star) was recorded live at the theatre on rua Nestor Pestana in São Paulo where Vieira was accompanied by orchestra and a big choir Centro Academico XI de Agosto. It was sort of Luiz Vieira's last shot at the charts;  Ever since Zimbo Trio appeared on the musisc scene circa 1964 - Brazilians sort of fell in love with this typical jazz format of piano, upright bass & drums. Manfredo Fest Trio was formed by 3 guys from Rio Grande do Sul: Manfredo Fest on the piano, Mathias Mattos on bass and Heitor Guy de Faria Mariz on drums. The repertoire is purely Bossa Nova; By 1965, A&P man Diogo Mulero who had been lured away from Chantecler as Artistic Director in early 1962 had done to Continental Discos what he first did for Chantecler: he took the Brazilian label up to the top alongside multinationals such as RCA, Columbia's CBS and EMI's Odeon. Mulero also signed most of Chantecler's old roster such as Poly, Leila Silva and band-leader Elcio Alvarez who charted with 'Evidência'. They had a problem at the art department though for they misspelt 'Casa vazia' (wrongly printing it 'vasia'), 'Amore scusami' became 'scuzzame' (God knows whoever did such a shitty job), 'Michael' became 'Aleluya'.

Rita Pavone had been bigger than The Beatles and everybody else in 1964. The Italian rock'n'roller conquered Brazil in a way few foreign acts had done since Nat King Cole's visit in 1959 when he was received by President Juscelino Kubistcheck in the presidential palace in Rio. Miss Pavone was received by São Paulo governor instead because there had been a military cloup a few weeks before the Italian singer's visit and there was only an ugly general acting as President of the Nation. Rita Pavone returned to Brazil in 1965 and RCA hurriedly assembled an album of left-overs from other records and called it 'Ritorna' (Rita Pavone returns). This time though Rita's tour was not as overwhelming as 1964's but she still reigned supreme.; Bossa Nova in its new format was selling records as anything. Independent label RGE had an impressive cast of Bossa Nova acts and after reaching #1 with 'O fino da bossa' at Number One in the albums' chart for many weeks RGE released 'O melhor da Bossa' (Bossa's Best) with Maysa, Ana Lucia, Wanda, Paulinho Nogueira, Zimbo Trio and the usual cast of suspects; Pery Ribeiro, the first act to record 'Garota de Ipanema' in 1963 hit the charts with another album; Moacyr Franco kept on recording covers from American movie-pictures and the like. 'As coisas que eu gosto' ('My favorite things' from 'The sound of music'), 'Musica das montanhas' ('The sound of music') and some Italian covers. Moacyr was getting more and more lost in the desert; Brazilian RCA Victor was getting lost too. While RCA was a powerhouse in countries like Italy and Argentina, in Brazil they lost their touch. While CBS was getting an impressive cast of Brazilian rock acts (called Jovem Guarda as of August 1965) RCA was not match for the Rio label. RCA signed some hot acts but for some mysterious reasons they did not chart. Ronnie Cord who had been big until 1964 sort of lost his touch with the buying public. Sergio Murilo who had been King of Rock in 1960 was on his way out. Adilson Ramos could not be called a rocker because he sang mostly boleros and balads. New acts like Rosemary, Cidinha Santos and Jose Ricardo recorded Italian covers mostly. 'Nova Geração' (New Generation) was a tentative compilation album which went nowhere.
