1961 January - 'Devolvi' / 'Ninguém é de ninguém' / 'Meu ultimo tango'

From 1961 to mid-1962, daily newspaper 'O Estado de S.Paulo' printed a list of the 5 best selling 78 rpm singles, 45 rpm extended-plays on 45rpm or 33 rpm and 12" long-plays aka albums on 33 rpm. The research was done by radio DJ Ricardo Macedo who  worked at Radio Excelsior and then moved on to Radio Bandeirantes the most popular radio station in Sao Paulo in the early 1960s. 

Ricardo Macedo was the kid brother of Fausto Macedo who had introduced the concept of Hit Parade-count-down in Sao Paulo back in 1948, at Radio Excelsior and daily 'Folha de S.Paulo'. 

Ricardo had a team working under him who kept a list of record-shops around the city which provided him (over the phone) the titles of the best selling discs at their out-let on a weekly basis. Based on that tally plus a list of the most-popular-songs played at the various radio stations during the week he assembled a final count-down radio-programme he presented on Sunday mornings which had a mass-following.

Mr Macedo's radio-show ran for 2 hours; from 10:00 am through to 12:00 am; he counted down the 25 best-selling singles of the week. Daily 'O Estado de S.Paulo' would then print the top 5 of each category on the following Sunday.
