1961 was a very special year in my life. My family moved from Marília-SP, a small city 500 km west of São Paulo in the hinterlands. I had never so much music in my life and experienced so many different radio stations. The Uruguayana-RS family we moved in with listened to music during the whole day, something I had never seen before. Eurico & his brother and sisters listened mostly to Radio Bandeirantes, Radio Cultura and a Pinheiros local radio station called Radio Industrial Paulista. Radio Bandeirantes was the most powerful station; they played pop music 24 hours a day and counted the 25 best selling singles on Sunday mornings. Radio Cultura played 2 songs straight with no ads in between. Radio Industrial Paulista was so poor they didn't have commercial jingles pre-recorded by advertising companies but speakers read commercial messages into the microphones on the air having Ray Conniff records played in the background.

Columnist-cum-agent-provocateur Carlos Imperial reviews 1961 and comes to the sad conclusion that with Celly Campello about to go into retirement, Brazilian teen-agers will be left without a 'Queen of Rock' for they do not accept either Sônia Delfino, Cleyde Alves or Célia Vilela as rock-singers.
